- Friday, October 27, 2000 Caribbean Olympians stay in touch compliments of Cable & Wireless Nearly 150 athletes and officials who represented Caribbean countries at the 2000 Sydney Olympics were able to stay in touch with their friends and loved ones back home, and Cayman's athletes and delegation were no different, thanks to Cable & Wireless. The company presented more than 50 mobile phones to Olympic delegations from 10 Caribbean countries. Cable & Wireless Australian company, Cable & Wireless Optus, provided the prepaid mobile service. Four of the mobile phones were given to the Cayman contingent that recently participated in the Olympic games. ÒIt was a fine gesture. Mobile phones are very useful and essential for keeping contact with each other, said Bobby Nunes, president of the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee. Cydonie Mothersill, the 100 and 200-meter track athlete who represented Cayman in the recent Olympics had this to say: ÒWhenever I needed to talk to my Mom, I could. Talking to my mother helps me have a clear perspective. Her belief in me and her belief that anything in Christ is possible really gave me encouragement. The phones helped. ÒThey were particularly important as the odds where stacked against me. While I was not a favourite I had confidence. In Atlanta we did not have mobile phones and we had to go outside to the phone booths, which was quite inconvenient. Thanks to Cable & Wireless things were made easier with these phones. Chief Executive for Cable & WirelessRegional Businesses, Robert Lerwill, noted: Cable & Wireless has been a part of the Caribbean family for over 127 years. But we are also a global family, with partners in over 70 countries, so we were able to use our global presence and provide this service through Cable & Wireless Optus. We know how important the encouragement of loved ones is to our regional athletes, especially when they are so far away from home. We hope this gesture made their stay in Australia even more enjoyable. Athletes from Antigua, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & Grenadines and the Cayman Islands received the mobile service on arrival in Sydney. In addition, courtesy of Cable & Wireless, they were also given prepaid cards to the value of Au$100 to keep in touch with loved ones back home. For more information contact: Andrea Fa'amoe
