December 13th, 2000 Organizers Announce Cancer Awareness Week Dates Cayman's largest annual cancer education and fund-raising event is set to take place shortly after we celebrate the New Year. Cable & Wireless and the Cayman Islands Cancer Society have announced that Cancer Awareness Week 2001 will begin on Sunday, January 21, with the popular Half Marathon and 6 1/2 mile Walk. This is also celebrated as National Cancer Survivors Day. The annual programme, now in its third year, will continue with a Candlelight Vigil, and Fundraising Dinner before ending with a Cancer Awareness Symposium on Saturday, January 27. "The Cancer Society is very proud to hold the 3rd Annual Cancer Awareness Week this coming January with the support of Cable & Wireless. We are very happy that we can give back to the community in such a big way each year. It is a different way to contribute than the day-to-day help that we are able to give. With the help of Cable & Wireless and other local sponsors we are able to educate, through support of international speakers and specialist information," said Roberta Bostock, Office Manager and Public Relations Director of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society. While discussing the week's events, Cable & Wireless General Manager Timothy Adam said," For the past three years Cable & Wireless has sponsored Cancer Awareness Week in an effort to empower victims of cancer, survivors, caregivers, and the families. The week provides education, which is one of the most important tools for those living with the disease, plus it gives hope and comfort in the knowledge that they are not alone," The Half Marathon and 6 1/2 mile walk kick-starts Cancer Awareness Week in the hope of raising funds for the Cancer Society's many local programmes. The non-denominational Candlelight Vigil, held on the Wednesday of the week, helps to unite the community in remembering and honouring loved ones who have passed on and to offer hope to a number of cancer survivors in the Cayman Islands. If you would like to add a loved ones picture to our memory and survivors wall please contact the Cancer Society at 949-7618. The entertaining centrepiece of the week will take place on the Friday. A Gala Dinner at the Marriott Hotel will feature popular keynote speaker Scott Burton, a world-renowned comedian and juggler extraordinaire. Mr. Burton, who injects light-hearted honour to a serious subject, is a cancer survivor himself. In his appearances, he strives to help motivate those currently living with the disease and those who have survived it. The Cancer Awareness Symposium wraps up Cancer Awareness Week by arming attendees with information and skills including strategies for self-empowerment and communicating with health care providers and loved ones. Additionally, international and local physicians will speak on communal solutions to issues facing cancer survivors, concerned families, friends, caregivers and health and service providers. The organisers of the event voiced their hopes for continued support of Cancer Awareness Week, which has become both an established part of the community calendar and an important fundraising tool since its inception in 1999. Mrs. Bostock said: "Through this event, we are able to raise funds to support Cancer Society projects for most of the coming year, and we remember those who have lost their lives to cancer, or are continuing to struggle with this disease. It is a week that brings the community together. It is a chance to give thought to something that will affect nearly all of us at one time in our life. It is a chance to make a difference." Cable & Wireless' Mr. Adam added, "Cancer is a disease that taxes all the resources and faith of the individual and their family. We hope that the Cayman community will come out to support a worthy cause that Cable & Wireless is proud to support." For further
