December 28th, 2000 Good News for Cable & Wireless Customers this Christmas In it's continuing efforts to provide better services to its valued customers in the Cayman Islands , Cable & Wireless announced today, that customers will now be able to move with quicker connections when on the internet, due to the company going live on our new Maya 1 fibre optic link this afternoon. After rigorous testing, today Internet users are now able to surf from site to site almost in an instant. "This is a momentous occasion for cable and wireless and internet in Cayman", says Ian Tibbetts head of the company's Data and Internet department, we've taken going online in Cayman to a whole new level. Tibbetts added, "This will bring fantastic improvements to the internet experience for our customers, without the need for precise optimization as is the case when connecting via satellite. The delay inherent with satellite is now eliminated by going via cable, further we are confident all our customers will see great improvement in their Internet service. Head of Cable & Wireless Technical operations Albert Anderson wished to thank the staff for their hard work in seeing this aspect of the Maya 1 project through. There are several benefits to the Maya 1 system in which cable and wireless has invested over US$20 million dollars. ...They include the potential for lower cost international access, this will allow Cable and Wireless to eventually further reduce the prices of international telecommunications. ...The ability to better service clients and businesses in Latin America, Which is an area of great potential for Cayman's offshore services industry. Finally, there will be significant increased reliability and resilience in the event of a natural disaster. Maya 1 Cable is a fibre optic system that when fully launched early next year will link the Cayman Islands to North, South and Central America.
