CABLE & WIRELESS LAUNCHES GLOBAL.NET SERVICE IN JAPAN Cable & Wireless (LSE: CW.Z), the global telecommunications group, today announced at INET Yokohama the launch in Japan of global.net, the company's global dedicated international internet access service for carriers, ISPs and corporate customers. The extension of global.net to Japanese customers has been driven by the successful completion of the first phase of Cable & Wireless' global IP infrastructure build programme, with seven international customer connection points in the US, Europe, the Pacific Rim -including Japan - announced in May this year. The benefits of global.net to Japanese customers include:
Global availability: global.net offers worldwide coverage, with connection
available to any of the global nodes deployed in Japan, USA, European
countries and Western Pacific region. Simon Cunningham, president of Cable & Wireless IDC, said: "Cable & Wireless is expanding its network and plans to open 84 IP nodes in the world by 2001. By using global.net, customers will be able to access content located in the United States and other countries with minimal hop counts. This means a faster Internet experience. In addition, Cable & Wireless' global IP network nodes are connected to the backbone with speeds up to OC-192 (9.6Gbps), and that ensures reliability with full redundancy under the integrated designing." "Our ability to optimize intra- and inter-region traffic-flows leverages our worldwide network of wholly owned subsidiaries and well-established operator partnerships, keeps packet-loss to an absolute minimum, and provides customers with ideal traffic throughput volume." global.net will be available for service in Japan in August this year. Cable & Wireless IDC is presenting the new service at INET 2000, in Yokohama, from 18 to 21July. About
