WI stars warm hearts Students from the Lighthouse and Sunrise School received an early Christmas present this past Friday when five top West Indies cricketers from the Cable & Wireless Crazy Cricket weekend held cricket clinics at the Smith Road Oval. Approximately 50 students were in the group where Sir Viv Richards, Michael Holding, Reon King and Franklyn Rose touched on the basics of the sport. Additionally, the cricketers posed for pictures, signed autographs and handed out T-shirts on behalf of Cable & Wireless, But this year, "The visit meant more than in the past four years, as the sport of cricket has been accepted as part of the International Special Olympics World Games" said Aileen Samuels, National and Technical of the Special Olympics of the Cayman Islands. "This weekend helps us have a leg up on the rest of the Caribbean in regards to this particular sport. Plus the guys really enjoy working with these cricketers" explains Samuels. "I think a weekend like this helps to boost morale. Most times when the Special Olympians train they see the same faces over and over,. When they meet new people especially world class athletes, it makes then feel special. Plus they love the attention" she added. Roberta Gordon, director of Sunrise Adult Training Center added "Our students really enjoyed themselves. Andy Myles, the assistant National Cricket Coach, regularly visits them once a week as part of their physical therapy. This really helps with the physical development of the Sunrise students. And it seems like we have a few budding cricketers in our group." Mrs Gordon thanked Cable & Wireless saying " I would like to thank Cable & Wireless for including us in their special weekend and for making our students welcome, Once again they have done a wonderful job". Match result : The Sherwin Campbell 11 featuring Franklyn Rose defeated the Sir Viv Richards 11, by 4 wickets in the Cable & Wireless Cricket Crazy Weekend exhibition match on Sunday at the Smith Road Oval.
